Dubbed the “Grand Central Station of the West,” the Transbay Project is one of the largest transit projects under construction in the western United States, providing over 7,000 jobs both onsite and at locations like OIW across the nation.

“Oregon Iron Works is honored to have been chosen as a subcontractor for this visionary project,” said OIW’s Tom Hickman, vice president sales and marketing.

Contracted under Skanska USA, Hickman believes that OIW’s advanced capability for specialized manufacturing led to the award of this contract. “Heavy, high complexity steel fabrication delivered to exacting specifications is not only a major focus for our business,” Hickman says, “but also a point of pride for our teams.”

OIW will fabricate the complex, seismic resistant exoskeleton structural steel frames incorporating castings and large diameter (32”) heavy wall pipe framing systems for Transbay. When completed, the Transit Center will centralize the region’s transportation network by connecting all points in the San Francisco Bay Area through 11 transit systems to serve more than 100,000 passengers per day.

As the northern terminus for high speed rail in California, the terminal is one of the first modern high speed rail stations to be constructed in the United States. This multi-billion dollar, Buy America project will make world-class public transit options accessible, seamless, safe, and efficient.

The Transbay Joint Powers Authority has primary jurisdiction over the project. Webcor/Obayashi is the general contractor and Skanska USA is a trade subcontractor for the structural steel package and Oregon Iron Works is subcontracted to Skanska USA.
