San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge Project Orthotropic Transition Girders
At the east end of the new SFOBB the bridge transitions from the suspension bridge to the concrete skyway leading to Oakland. These complete girders facilitate the connection of the concrete superstructure of the skyway to the steel superstructure of the suspension bridge.
Vigor was one of the few US fabricators to win contracts on the new San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge. Our team was responsible for fracture critical fabrication of the two transition orthotropic box span girders that connect the concrete skyway portion of the bridge to the steel self-anchored suspension portion of the bridge. Each girder was 93’ wide, 20’ deep and 220’ long weighing 1,750 tons each.
